So often our English classes get stuck in the 20th century with document cameras and projectors, while the science and math classes receive the newest technology. I would like to offer my students a chance to also experience English class with new technology and capabilities. A tablet connected to my digital projection screen will allow me to model essays, revise and edit student essays in front of the class, and even allow students to show their own work to each other. It is vital that students see good writing, learn how to revise their own writing, and help each other with writing. It is my hope that this tablet will change the way we learn how to write as a class. The printer will also be for students. While teachers at my school have plenty of access to printers and copiers, students rarely do. Our class is based on research and projects and students teaching students. This is made much more difficult for students when they do not have access to a printer to accomplish these tasks. When they teach a lesson to the class, they often want to print notes and activities for their fellow students. At times they need to print essays for peer edits or for revision. They may need to print academic articles. This printer will make all of this much easier for students. Finally, the USB chargers are to try and mitigate the distraction of cell phones in class. By creating a charging station in a corner of the room, it is more likely that students will charge their phones instead of being distracted by them in class. It's a way to encourage good behavior rather than punish bad behavior. Many studies have shown that this is more effective to get desired behavior from teens.
