  • iPads for Passes

    Funded Nov 19, 2024

Thank you so much for your generous donation to my classroom project. This particular project is going to make our daily lives in the classroom much easier and everything run much more smoothly.

Having adapted a new online hall pass program this year, how to put it in place without disrupting learning was a big concern for me. Having the iPad in place for this system has prevented this disruption, and now students can take care of their personal needs without having to share aloud in front of other students and without interrupting me or other students during instruction.

So far, this system has worked incredibly well, and we're already coming up with other great uses, such as clubs making video announcements and as an alternative instructional aid when my district laptop isn't working properly. It really has improved my quality of instruction and classroom environment.”

  • Fighting the Pink Tax with Free Feminine Hygiene Products

    Funded Nov 8, 2024

While it may seem like a small thing, offering tampons and pads to students, I can tell you that it is absolutely not a small thing. I regularly watch students come into the room and go straight to the cabinet without a word. Sometimes I know the student, sometimes I don't, but it's become common knowledge that any student is welcome at any time.

Last week, a young woman I'd never met before came in shyly and asked if she could take a tampon from the cabinet. When she found what she needed, she told me, "This is a life-saver. I was going to have to go home early and miss class." The option to come to my room and get the product she needed kept her in class. This is what I mean when I say that this is not a small thing. Students who are comfortable and have the proper hygiene products are students who can pay attention in class and grow in knowledge.

Through your support of my classroom, you have enable countless numbers of students to go through their days at school feeling safe, supported, and hygenic. This is no small gift that you've given them, and we are all incredibly grateful for your donation.”

  • Classroom Refresh

    Funded Aug 14, 2024

Thank you so much for your continued and generous support of our public school classrooms. Over the years, I have worked hard to make my classroom inviting, comfortable, and overall, a place where students want to learn. I have only been able to do this through the kindness and generosity of Donors Choose and the people who give. The set up of my room has been a game changer, and that is all thanks to you. As we move forward, I hope to continue to earn your support and trust. I can't say thank you enough.”

  • Reading Corner Refresh

    Funded Dec 20, 2023

Thank you for continuing to support our classroom as we tweak and adjust to make it the best classroom possible. Since our students in the IB program have to do so much independent research, reading, and writing, we have a lot of days where students are asked to work quietly for long periods of time. They need this and they work hard to make the most of the time we give them. The refresh of the reading corner has already proved to be so valuable to this aspect of our classroom. We've already made use of the space multiple times in the last two weeks, and the kids love it.”

  • Creating a Reading/Quiet Work Corner

    Funded Nov 27, 2023

The reading corner you helped us build has already been an asset to our classroom. I teach an advanced course (International Baccalaureate) that requires a lot of reading and essay writing, and the kids have already been competing with each other to get the "comfy seats" for their long bouts of hard work. It means so much to us that you have helped create this space that they love. The lighting and tea kettle also help create a calming space where they feel happy and comfortable doing the hard work that we ask of them.”

  • Classroom Refresh

    Funded Sep 10, 2023

Thank you so much for your support of our classroom. I have found that students respond strongly to the setting in which they learn. If I can create a space for students that they enjoy, that is comfortable, and over which they have some control, they tend to pay more attention to what we're doing. I also believe it shows them how much we want them there and care about them...an empty room does not make students feel welcome or excited about being there. The students chose the items for this refresh, and they were excited when the items came in. My classroom, thanks to you, is a brighter and more enjoyable place for them to be.”

  • Feeding These Teens

    Funded Sep 5, 2023

Thank you so much for your contribution to our classroom snack cabinet. Research has shown that kids learn better when they are not hungry or distracted by where their next meal comes from. Helping us create our snack cabinet means you are helping students be their best selves and helping our classrooms be welcoming, nourishing, and less stressful places for the kids to be. When they all gather together during lunch, they not only joke and chat together while they eat, but they also discuss school and life, and I think this couldn't be more important for them.

Again, thank you for supporting our students.”

  • Shooting for State!

    Funded Jun 8, 2022

Thank you so much for your contribution to our team. The students have been studying with the online materials you've provided, and they really love the program way more than using the study binders. They've been able to scrimmage each other and take practice tests every week. They are even able to compete against kids at other schools who also use the program. It really has been a game changer. As we move forward towards competition, we will be using these materials on a daily basis as we push ourselves to make it to state competition. Again, we are so grateful for your faith in us and your contribution to our group.”

  • New and Improved Hillcrest Library

    Funded Apr 1, 2021

Thanks to you our library has some amazing resources for our teachers and students!

The button machine has been a HUGE hit. Our clubs used it to make buttons just for fun. The biggest club, our Anime Club, made so many character buttons and are still wearing them on their backpacks and lanyards. Student Council members are also using it to make school pride buttons that are showing off our mascot!

The Cricut machine is also a fantastic resource for both our teachers and students. The possibilities this machine can do is going to benefit our classes so much. Some of our clubs designed stickers and we printed those out to show off their swag. We also used it to make sashes for our Principal of the Year and Teacher of the Year! Teachers have used it to make decals for t-shirts during our testing week, letters for decorating their classrooms, and a group of students even made me a custom sign!

The impact from COVID really brought down our spirits but these items have really helped brighten our days! I can't wait to see what future projects will come out from using them. Thank you so much!”

  • Rewarding Academic Excellence

    Funded Dec 2, 2020

For this project, I wasn't looking for instructional materials--I was looking for inspirational materials. With the frames and board, we (my students and I) created a Hall of Fame for past graduates. We put together a nomination form for senior teachers to nominate the graduates who they believe achieved something great. My students were able to read through these nominations and see who had gone before them, and I think it was a great moment for them to realize that they, too, could achieve great things if they worked hard enough.

After we created our Hall of Fame, students and teachers were seen standing in front of the case reading about these former students, and they seemed impressed. In our past we've had politicians-to-be, NFL players-to-be, Nurses, New York Businessmen, Lawyers, and Scientists. I think that during this time of uncertainty and anxiety about our future, it's been good for students and teachers to have these reminders of how life can be. My goal is to add to this case every year with 1-2 teacher-nominated graduates. I think it will become a great tradition on our campus.”

So often our English classes get stuck in the 20th century with document cameras and projectors, while the science and math classes receive the newest technology. I would like to offer my students a chance to also experience English class with new technology and capabilities. A tablet connected to my digital projection screen will allow me to model essays, revise and edit student essays in front of the class, and even allow students to show their own work to each other. It is vital that students see good writing, learn how to revise their own writing, and help each other with writing. It is my hope that this tablet will change the way we learn how to write as a class. The printer will also be for students. While teachers at my school have plenty of access to printers and copiers, students rarely do. Our class is based on research and projects and students teaching students. This is made much more difficult for students when they do not have access to a printer to accomplish these tasks. When they teach a lesson to the class, they often want to print notes and activities for their fellow students. At times they need to print essays for peer edits or for revision. They may need to print academic articles. This printer will make all of this much easier for students. Finally, the USB chargers are to try and mitigate the distraction of cell phones in class. By creating a charging station in a corner of the room, it is more likely that students will charge their phones instead of being distracted by them in class. It's a way to encourage good behavior rather than punish bad behavior. Many studies have shown that this is more effective to get desired behavior from teens.
