Healthy snacks are important to knock out the midday hunger that blocks focus and makes kids cranky. Many students nibble on their lunch throughout the morning and some will not admit that they haven't had any real food that day, just chips and soda or coffee and pastries. So as the day wears on they become unfocused and tired. Without exception, when hunger is curbed hands go up to answer questions, complex ideas pour into the pages of essays, and big questions are examined. This is the most exciting part of being a teacher: seeing abstract thought and informed opinions formulate in real time. Seeing kids really take possession of the critical thinking being asked of them is astonishing and priceless. These kids are brilliant, and also sometimes hungry.
