All my students want to fall in love with a book, to be engrossed in a series, like many of their classmates are. This is easier for some than others, and this is the focus of my project. Through the use of graphic novels, I want to capture a child's love of stories and art and use it to make loving reading accessible to all. I want students with reading challenges, attention issues, and those who are learning English to find a series they fall in love with. A series that they will never forget reading. Their first foray into the life a true reader.
Graphic novels are the perfect tools to ignite this passion for reading, as they have smaller chunks of text and copious amounts of picture support. Though these elements may seem insignificant, they are not to a child who is overwhelmed by large chunks of text. A child who sees a thick book and feels like they can never read that many words, that many pages, that many chapters. A child who then feels like reading is not for them. I have seen, with my own eyes, how graphic novels can change that for a child. The way they introduce them to complex vocabulary, themes, and plots though the use of pictures and a reduced text load. The way it draws them into the world of words and stories and eventually helps them transition into a reader's life.
Having an amazing graphic novel library available in their own classroom will be life-changing for them, a pass into a world they thought they could never enter. I am beyond excited at the prospect of this project being fulfilled.
