Breakout boxes are great ways to get every student involved with a physical task. Students must work together to solve puzzles related to the topic we are working on in class. One of the great things about these boxes is that they can be reused for different subtopics throughout the year. These boxes require teamwork, critical thinking skills, communication, and creativity. These boxes can be used in many different ways. I can use them to assess where students are halfway through a unit, as an exit ticket at the end of class, or even have students design them for me to try! All of my students have tested higher when a lab experiment or hands-on activity has been a part of their assessment. I want to foster a growth in collaboration in class and be able to give my students more problem-solving tools they can take with them.
