  • Oculus Club

    Funded Dec 30, 2019

    Dear Ms. Costa,

I am writing this letter to thank you for your generous contribution to the students of P.S. 676. BECAUSE OF YOU--our students were able to immerse themselves through new experiences in academic content and make tremendous positive strides with their behaviors in the classroom environment! I can't thank you enough for being so kind and considerate with your purchase for my class. I'd just like to reflect upon the impact the OCULUS CLUB had for our students throughout this school year.

Before COVID, remote learning, and the threat of Killer Bees--I had a tough group of students that weren't motivated by typical incentives that had worked in the past. These students would often sleep in class or show up late because they were up all night before--playing video games at home. Upon having conversations with these students, we came to an understanding that I would let them use the Oculus Quest if they began to put forth the effort to complete their work in class. That meant coming to school on time, participating in class, and trying their best to complete their assignments. All it took was one day after school to use the Oculus for these students to make their adjustments in the classroom environment! They were thrilled to get the chance to play something that they had never experienced before. The Oculus made a tremendous difference in their attitudes and behaviors. For the time we were able to use it while in the classroom and school--it was a game changer. Unfortunately, the events of COVID cut everything short. However, the beautiful thing is--that I will be able to carry it over as an intervention club for my students next year. So I am still thrilled--knowing I have something to use for next year.

On top of the behavior intervention the VR Headset played for my students--it also served as an immersive tool we utilized for learning experiences in my school. Our school celebrates student work with quarterly unit demonstrations called Integrated Project Week. During this time, students research specific science topics and connect them to ELA and Math inside the classroom--while making connections to real world experiences outside of the classroom. For our IPW topic before remote learning took place--we had our students research Natural Disasters and how they impact our local and global communities. During our presentation--we used the VR to allow students to experience different natural disasters. From hurricanes, to floods, to tornadoes--it was a HIT! Everyone was lining up and wanted to experience what it was like to be in the midst of these natural disasters through the Oculus. Even our principal tried it out and was impressed!

While in school, there was always an opportunity to utilize the technology in the classroom environment. Without your donation, we wouldn't have been able to capitalize on those opportunities. With that being said, I truly would like to thank you. As a special education teacher, I know just how important it is to utilize different means to connect with students. Having the chance to use the Oculus in my classroom this past year--truly made a difference--and I know this upcoming year--it will continue to make a difference. Thank you so much Ms. Costa. Your donation will continue to influence and inspire my students.

P.S--I have a lot more pictures on the desktop at school, but due to COVID and the shutdown, I was not able to upload them to this site. I apologize for that, but will get them to you when I am allowed back in the building.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Nouvertne

  • HHelp Us Make 3D Printed Face Masks

    Funded Apr 10, 2020

I can't begin to thank you enough for your support in funding this project. Not only will we will be able to create more face masks for those who need them, but we will be helping reducing the spread of the coronavirus. With your support, 676 was able to step up and play a part in helping those in need during this time! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Nouvertne

After collecting data on our students through various methods of testing, we've identified a core group of special needs boys that are far below grade level standards in reading, writing, and math skills. A special school counsel agreed that many of the academic shortcomings from these students stem from behavioral issues - poor social-emotional abilities to work with other students. After identifying these students and their needs, we thought they would benefit from an extra curricular activity that would be utilized as an incentive for them to improve their ability to work with others in the classroom environment. Many of these students struggle with behavior in the classroom environment and this project was created to help improve those areas of needs as a method to have the students work together in a rewarding learning environment.
