Math manipulatives are used every day! I push into classrooms to support my students' learning, so they can better access the classroom material and feel like part of the community. I also pull students out into small groups to deepen their mathematical understanding and to close any gaps. We dive into mathematical understanding through physical manipulatives then transfer to visual manipulatives on whiteboards. This helps build a conceptual understanding for my students to create a concrete model of their mathematical thinking and then transfer that concrete model to a visual model. I have my students draw their visual presentations on whiteboards because the median allows for quick and easy changes and adjustments. Also, students are very motivated by whiteboards! We currently are using plastic paper covers and hand-me-down whiteboards that do not fully erase. With the new manipulatives, my students will be able to feel successful and important.
