I have found that students who "never" read or say that they "hate to read" begin by reading these high-interest books and then, in turn, begin to read many other books. I have seen how they become regular readers as a result of beginning with books they love. I have witnessed how instilling the habit of regular reading in students who traditionally say that they "never read" can change a student's life forever. These books are a gateway to literature for my students.
Giving my students the chance to read from books they choose and recommend increases their chances of becoming regular readers and regular readers have a far greater chance of success.
What I know for sure about every single student is that they all want to learn. They want to read, think, talk, and share their ideas. This is exactly what my students will have the opportunity to do once we receive these new books. Students will choose books after the class participates in book shares and book talks. They will participate in group work about their book. The goal is to have a literature-rich environment where all students can increase their literacy skills. Students will be able to practice the skills that come naturally to good readers and will leave my classroom more literate than when they arrived.
Your donation for their much-needed books will change the lives of my students.
