I am hoping to provide my kiddos with fun and engaging toys and materials that will introduce them to the exciting world of STEM. Often, our youngest learners lack access to age appropriate activities that draw them in and encourage creative and critical thinking. The requested toys and materials will help students to begin engaging their brains in ways that they may not have before. For example, In the coming months, we will be working on a Gingerbread Man unit. Traditionally, this unit has been very literacy focused. We spend time retelling, rewriting, and comparing and contrasting different versions of the story. One of the new kits that I’ve requested will allow us to expand our unit into other content areas as students try to engineer a “safe way” for the Gingerbread Man to cross the river. They will have to construct a boat or raft, and experiment with different materials to make sure that it floats. They will also use math to see how much weight their newly built structure can hold. These new materials will offer an opportunity for learning in different capacities that these kiddos haven’t had before. Many of the requested new materials build off of familiar rhymes and stories that we can then expand upon and use as a point of reference as we bring STEM into our classroom! Please consider donating to our project and help me to create students who are proficient in, and excited about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics!
