Studies have shown that students learn best when they are engaged. Developing creativity among my students is a task that I try to develop on a weekly basis. Although I understand the importance of using handouts in my instruction, I also recognize the significance of creating a hands on project in my curriculum. As we approach the topic of the Jamestown colony of 1607, it is my desire for students to create a diorama of the English settlement. After learning about the fort, students will take a stab at creating their own colony while using resources for dioramas. For example, they will create homes for the colonists, a church and design the overall look and feel of Jamestown in 1607. Furthermore, I encourage my students to work with a partner or a small group, but at times I am unsure how thoroughly they individually understood the reading and content. A project such as this one allows an alternate mode of learning as students become invested in the development of their diorama. Additionally, they are likely to ask thought provoking questions and even research colonial Jamestown on their own in order to ensure that they are creating an accurate portrayal of colonial life in 1607. By donating to this wonderful project, you are supporting the arts in the classroom and ensuring inner city public school children get the opportunity to develop their artistic skills.
