Working in a Title I district, most of our students come from low-income households. Our school district has had several budget cuts, which has greatly impacted the supplies I am able to provide for my students. I am also a first year teacher, which means my supplies are very low. My students are eager to learn, and deserve the most out of their learning experience. My school district is making a shift to a more student-centered learning environment. This means that students have more choice in the different ways of learning, and have different opportunities to explore the many ways there are to learn. Currently my students are using paper and pencil for their center work, which is not hands-on, nor is it very engaging. My students need to be reading, playing and building words in order to enhance their reading skills. Unfortunately, my current literacy centers do not give them many opportunites to do that. In order for my first graders to be expert readers by the end of first grade, they must be exploring words and letters in different ways. My goal is to create interactive and engaging literacy centers so that my students are learning, and having fun while doing so. I want my students to be able to have a choice in their learning, and decide which strategy works best for them. With these materials, my students will have a variety of activities to choose from to enhance their reading. I have many different learners in my classroom, and these materials will ensure that I am meeting the needs of each one of them through the means of differentiation.
