We Want Lifelong Readers!
Funded Aug 12, 2020The Storyworks magazine and online subscription has been a game changer for this unique year. The comprehension skills are fundamentals I teach in my class and when these reading comprehension skills are paired with interesting fiction and non-fiction stories like the ones included in Scholastic Storyworks, it's a home run for students and teacher!
Since we have been forced to do distance learning, I have really taken advantage of the digital stories and comprehension google classroom assignments. The students have a user friendly platform to show their understanding. This has been so helpful this year. For the students who come into the class, they love getting a physical magazine and having the choice to show their thinking digitally or with old fashion pencil and paper.
I also really enjoy how everything on the digital subscription can be customized to differentiate for each student, this has been one of the aspects of teaching that has been especially difficult when we are sitting behind a computer screen.”

Funded Aug 5, 2020My students love our portable chairs! These seats help us social distance so easily and with comfort. Our school has spent most of the school year doing distance learning. However, we have been able to invite small group back to school the past four weeks. It was strange and wonderful all at the same time. Having items like the chairs you provided, my students feel safe and happy. They love using them especially for reading! In my class, the students can even take the seats outside and do their work in the fresh air.”

Funded Dec 8, 2019We were so thrilled to get a new class set of Where the Red Fern Grows! I use this novel as the basis for a reading and writing unit. From this one incredible story, students practice mastering the skills of fluency, key ideas, details, craft and structure, integration of knowledge and history. This year we also used the rich figurative language within the book to facilitate our learning. Our grade levels focuses on adding significant detail and style to writing. Using figurative language helps expand on meaning and inference within a student's writing, as well as an enlightening experience for the reader.
With reference to the book and the many examples of figurative language, my class got to see the impact description can have. It allowed my students to incorporate their own versions of language such as metaphors, imagery, personification, allusion, jargon, etc., to writing.
Using themes from Where the Red Fern Grows, we were able to create reading and writing works that were meaningful for my students.
This story is beloved to my fifth and sixth graders, no matter the era they live in. Thank you again for the gift this novel, it will be used for years to come.”

Mrs. Cherry
