To Become a Better Reader, You Must Read!
Funded Dec 9, 2024I’m so grateful for your generosity and care in helping fund my request. My students will be so happy to receive fresh books in our class! We love to read together and students at this age still love picking up a book, especially when it’s geared toward their interest and reading level! Aloha!”

Mrs. Cherry

Funded Nov 18, 2023Technology is an integral part of our day to day, even in my 1st and 2nd grade classroom. It is important to me as an educator to model how devices can be used to learn and research and how they can be a positive tool in our lives. This means having up-to-date devices in the classroom that work properly.
We use our devices at least three times a week. Students are very excited to use the ipad in our reading and math rotations. We have educational programs that are game based but scientifically backed as researched based learning tools-the best of both worlds! Students can have some autonomy with their learning when trusted with their class ipads.
Many kids have some sort of device at home but in class we train our students to care for them like supplies in the classroom, with care and proper handling. The impact of our new ipads has been great.”

Funded Aug 3, 2023Many thanks for the storage chair backs. When the students walk into their classroom the first day, either with trepidation, nerves, or bubbling excitement, I like to have the room esthetic one of calm, organization, and a sense of place. The beautiful black chair backs are eye-catching and something the students gravitate to immediately.
Their names were written in and they knew they had a special place to put their things.
Pencil bags, new pencils, erasers, notebooks, etc. are coveted items when back to school shopping. I also provide special tools we use all year long. To have these goodies tucked away into their own space is beholden to my students. They were and are thrilled for their storage spaces.”

Funded Jun 14, 2022We have had a back to normal school year at our campus. Students are free to move and collaborate as before! With this being said, our students still love to have their own space for their own materials and supplies.
The use of the chair-backs you've supplied have been an integral part of my student autonomy and with using the space of our classroom. These chair backs are very expensive, and in the past I only could buy a few. With your help I have been able to supply each student with a means to keep and use their own class matierials.”

Funded Dec 15, 2021Recieving new novel sets is truly the gift that keeps on giving for our classes. I am lucky enough to use novels as the basis for many of my language art lessons. The two sets purchased by you are very different but ideal for teaching important skills for my students.
Some of these skills we focused on are:
Theme: What type of themes are evident? The quest? Fall from Grace? Alienation? Good vs. Evil? How do you connect to these themes in your own life? What patterns do we see across other novels and book that have the same themes?
Conflict: most stories have a protaganist where there is always an internal conflict of some sort. What other conflicts arise? Character vs. nature? Character vs. technology? Character vs. character?
Figurative language: Every good writer incorporates literary elements to highten the reader's experience. Identifying personification, imagery, hyperbole, foreshadowing in these grade level novels help serve as a model for secure writing.
Attached are three students who loved the novel Holes. They couldn't put the book down and were excited to dig deep into the concepts above.”

Back to Class
Funded Aug 30, 2021Thank you so much for the variety of items this donor's choose fulfilled.
We have used the headphones almost daily as apart of our technology in the classroom. Technology is used through individual computers where students use educational intervention sites for math and language arts. As a 5/6 grade level teacher, I am also using teaching students how to properly research and apply their research to informational writing.
This order also contained items for our internet groups. I taught a six week internet group based on dinosaurs for our younger grade levels. The STEM themed dinosaur activities went beyond just the facts of dinosaurs and allowed our smallest learners to have a hands on experience. The fossil digging was especially exciting!”

Funded Jun 8, 2021We have used the chair back storage since day one of school this year. Each student has their own storage unit, which allows them to keep their school belongings organized and individualized.
Students keep their laungage art and math binders, writing tools, rulers, glue, folders. books, and anything else that is necessary throughout the school day. Students have expressed their gratitude and enjoyment of using the chair backs.
"It is really nice to have our own space for our things, especially since we are still social distancing as much as we can in class." 5th grade student.
" Having a chair back organizer lets me know where all my stuff is and we have quicker transitions when getting things we need." 6th grade student.”

Funded Jan 1, 2021The book that was donated, Number the Stars, is a book I read in elementary school. The notions and protagonist's choices are something that resonate with every generation, which is why I choose to teach language art and social/emotional skills from this novel.
Some skills we are learning through this novel are vocabulary expansion, compare and contasting, conflicts traits, such as self vs. self, self vs. society, and self. vs. others. In our class, we are always trying to connect deeply and complexly to themes.
Reading in our class is social. Although some students like to work independently, I encourage students to share often and read together. Some thinking routines for sharing may be: Give One, Get One, which implores students to give an understanding and also get a new understanding from a peer. Another sharing exercise is, What is the main idea, what is the underlying idea, and is there a hidden idea or message that is not explicit?
I am lucky to have so many avid readers in my class and our shared experiences from reading a novel together is so beneficial.”

We Want Lifelong Readers!
Funded Aug 12, 2020The Storyworks magazine and online subscription has been a game changer for this unique year. The comprehension skills are fundamentals I teach in my class and when these reading comprehension skills are paired with interesting fiction and non-fiction stories like the ones included in Scholastic Storyworks, it's a home run for students and teacher!
Since we have been forced to do distance learning, I have really taken advantage of the digital stories and comprehension google classroom assignments. The students have a user friendly platform to show their understanding. This has been so helpful this year. For the students who come into the class, they love getting a physical magazine and having the choice to show their thinking digitally or with old fashion pencil and paper.
I also really enjoy how everything on the digital subscription can be customized to differentiate for each student, this has been one of the aspects of teaching that has been especially difficult when we are sitting behind a computer screen.”

Funded Aug 5, 2020My students love our portable chairs! These seats help us social distance so easily and with comfort. Our school has spent most of the school year doing distance learning. However, we have been able to invite small group back to school the past four weeks. It was strange and wonderful all at the same time. Having items like the chairs you provided, my students feel safe and happy. They love using them especially for reading! In my class, the students can even take the seats outside and do their work in the fresh air.”
