A gathering rug is so important in Kindergarten. We spend about a third of our day as a whole class sitting on the rug to listen to stories, learn new things, share our best work, and as a place to gather during transitions. Having this rug in my classroom would greatly increase our learning because my students can focus their energy on their listening instead of worrying about where to sit or having someone too close to them. Kindergartners love to have a place to call their own and this rug would allow my students that sense of pride and ownership. Everyone learns their best when we feel safe and protected in the space we are in. I have spent the year talking with my students about personal space and how we all have different levels of comfort in our personal space during the day. Respecting the personal space of others is a skill we have been practicing, especially when we are all together on the rug. This rug will allow my students to easily respect personal space of their fellow classmates by looking for the outline of the square. They will be able to focus their attention and energy on what we are learning instead of feeling like their personal space is being compromised.
