Research has proven that young children are not made to sit for long periods of time and that not every child is the same. They need to be moving and given opportunities to get their energy out, even while learning. Why should we expect them all to excel in their work in the same seat? Giving them a choice not only will benefit their success in their work, but it also teaches them to be responsible in their learning and the choices they make. As a second year teacher, I am working to build up my classroom to be inclusive to all types of learners, whether that is at a desk or on the floor. I saw first hand this past year that my students struggle to sit still to complete work, and many are coming in tired, falling asleep, and with sensory issues that keep them from fully engaging in the curriculum and their peers. Our new curriculum has students collaborating and working groups, as well as independently. Flexible seating will allow my students seating options throughout the classroom conducive to working with peers and independently. It also affords them the opportunity to be the best learners that they can be and get their sensory needs met. Thank you for your support!
