As educators, we seek to provide our students with every possible experience they can use on the path to becoming successful, productive adults. In our tiny rural area, there aren't a lot of opportunities for kids to do anything that ISN'T a sport. We have no programs for music, drama, or art. I want our students to explore their talents and receive the same opportunities as kids from larger cities. Many of our students are left without an outlet to display their abilities.
Our school has been without a band or drumline for almost 20 years. Our old instruments have been given to other schools or stolen. I'm requesting new Marching Snare Drums, Marching Bass Drums, and Marching Quads.
Friday night football games play an integral role in our town’s way of life. Those of us who graduated in previous decades remember how much spirit the band brought to the school, the teams, and to the community. We are doing our best to re-establish our school traditions and our sense of school pride. We recently re-established the color guard at our school, and both the students and the community have embraced the flag corps with open arms. The color guard currently performs to recorded music…but we would love to have a drumline performing alongside them.
We plan to teach the students how to read music, compose cadences, and other marching band skills. The students will perform at ball games and in parades. After the first year of drumline, we plan to attend summer camps to help build their skills. It is our hope that this will become something that can help the students in their future educational endeavors, perhaps as a boost to their college applications, or in the way of scholarships.
We have the talent, and we have the drive...we just need a little help on the financial end!
