Middle school age is one of the hardest stages of life a students must work through. Students deal with high levels of peer pressure, self-esteem issues, bullying concerns, and trying to find out who they are as they transition into high school. The Advisory Program is designed to develop support systems within the classroom and school environment that empower student success. Each morning all students will engage in a classroom meeting called Advisory. The lesson is delivered school-wide across all grade levels and is focused on a topic that will address the social emotional needs of students utilizing a hands-on activity. Lessons include topics of how to appropriately stand-up for yourself or how to intervene when you see a peer being picked on. There is also an open floor portion of the meeting for students to speak freely of concerns or issues they may have experienced the day before. In addition, leadership roles are assigned within the group to students that are based on their individual qualities. The outcome of this program is a culture change within the school. Students realize their belonging and how to help other students find their place as well. The culture change is that of acceptance of all students and understanding that we are all different and learn different....and that is OK!
