Chemistry is an extremely abstract and intangible science. The atom is so unfathomably small so for most topics we cover, students observe macro-scale effects and have to connect them to what is actually occurring to the atoms in the substance. Mixing two colorless liquids instantly turns bright yellow: What does this indicate about the chemical reaction within the atoms that comprise these substances? Snatoms make forming and breaking apart molecules a snap! Magnets make Snatoms a better representation of what molecules actually look like, and help students feel the attraction between atoms. The idea with Snatoms is simple--to make the best hands-on chemistry kit available. Snatoms are a huge improvement over traditional ball and stick models. Snatoms will also help counter the misconception that bonds store energy--they don't. Instead, energy is released when bonds form and is required to break bonds. This is easy to demonstrate with Snatoms. Across the board, my students struggle with visualizing atoms and how they bond together.
