Which Came First the Chicken or the Egg?

Funded Sep 26, 2023

I wish I could capture the true excitement and curiosity that my students shared while we studied the life cycle of a chicken and the real life experience they enjoyed. For 21 days we studied the life cycle of the chicken, through books, the learning resource model, and the egg incubator.

Students learned about how you have to have a rooster and a hen in order to have a baby chicks. They also understood if you don't have a hen you can still develop a baby chick by using a incubator. They learned that chickens and eggs are all different colors and sizes. In the beginning students had the opportunity to predict which egg they thought would hatch first.

On day 21, I don't know who was more excited the students or myself when we looked over and our eggs started to hatch. As they were hatching they had lots and lots of questions. After they hatched, the chicks were placed in a container with a heat lamp to watch them scratch around, chirp, eat, and grow.

This learning experience will be something that these students will never forget. It was not only an experience for the students but also for me. I was learning along with them. This experience that will continue for future students in my classes. We truly appreciate all that you done to make this learning experience happen for these young students.”

With gratitude,
