I want to create a loving, adaptable classroom that provides our students freedom of choice, comfort and community. Our current sitting situation is static desks and hard backed chairs. I’d like to replace these with an adjustable standing table, a SmartStudy Ball Desk, several wobble chairs and a set of bean bags. It is believed that allowing students freedom of choice can increase confidence and willingness to work in groups. Some studies have discussed that long amounts of sitting can be detrimental to a person’s health (Mayo Clinic, 2019) and we want our students to be as active as possible so they’re able to learn in good health! Many of our students are also dealing with an abundance of sensory input that can be helped by fidgeting, swinging, tapping etc (Mahar, 2006). This allows students to focus and remain attentive for longer. Finally, certain studies have reasoned that by allowing open movement in classrooms that students feel less territorial about their desks and are willing to participate more in class discussions (Brooks, 2012).
