I would like to purchase a classroom set of ukuleles for my 5th grade music students. Most of my students do not have access to instruments or live music, so bringing that into our school is important. My students have been playing recorder for two years and are looking for a new and exciting way to build upon their previous years of music. They will continue to learn new rhythms and notes, but now go one step further and learn chords on the ukulele. Melody, harmony, and rhythm can easily be broken down with the ukulele. Children who learn at different rates can all play the same song because it can be taught in several different layers on the ukulele. Some students can play the song by plucking individual notes, and others can play by strumming chords. The ukulele is portable and small enough for young students, an excellent solo or ensemble instrument, a great instrument that students can play while singing, and relatively inexpensive compared to other instruments. My students would greatly benefit from learning the ukulele and could inspire them for a lifelong love of music.
