To enrich students who are gifted in language arts, we develop speaking and writing skills. My students recently wrote" Ted Talks." They then edited, rehearsed, and recorded their talk. It became clear that recording in a classroom is problematic. The podcasting club along with our English language learners who are tested in speaking on the ACCESS test also struggle with background noise interfering with their recordings. At our school we are problem-solvers, so I put the challenge to my IG students. Each student group design a portable (removable) recording booth to provide a quiet space to record. Each team produced a sketch of their design alongside a detailed budget and a written pitch. Now it is time to make the dream come true. By investing in the materials my students need to build the recording booths they have designed, you will help them serve the larger school community by solving one problem. We plan to build the booths and use them. We will reflect on which design(s) provides the best soundproofing, stability/durability, and portability for future builds. When students use their learning and skills to solve real world problems that benefit their classmates, they feel empowered.
