In a class that I titled "Life Skills 101," I am teaching a sewing lesson where I teach students how to use a sewing machine. My goal with this lesson is to have students stop buying new clothes when they get a hole in their shirt, instead, they will be able to fix it. Or how they can sew a button on a shirt, or even how they can "up-cycle" clothing to make old clothes new and fresh without spending a lot of money.
My reasoning for all of this is because we started talking about budgeting and how to get the most of our money, and students are stressing out on how much they will have to pay for clothes. I want to continue to instill their creative and innovative mindset in terms of clothing and sewing. In addition, most students don't have any adults that know this skill to pass onto their children, so I am using this as an opportunity to build a new and somewhat essential skill.
