Providing students with the option to pick their own learning space and seating gives them a sense of ownership and accountability. There is a massive amount of research correlating the subtle movements that flexible seating allows and an increase in student focus and engagement. Students who require specially designed instruction benefit from the ability to move and have access to sensory items, during instruction. These items will decrease stimulating behaviors and increase focus by helping the students stay on-task. The classroom will also be including a "Cozy Area". This area will allow students to take a break from instruction, due to being overwhelmed, frustrated, scared or emotionally/physically drained. This area is important to help students self-regulate their emotions and take accountability for their actions. (The photo listed is a current glance of my classroom; I would love to make it more welcoming for my students)
