All of my students are in the process of learning English. Many of them are able to read in their home language and do it well. Coming to America can be discouraging for them because their strengths in academics in their home country do not always transfer in a new country with a new language. Regular novels that elementary students are reading do not include pictures and provide no support to my English learning students. I want my newcomer students to have access to books in English that they can understand and do grade level activities with. Graphic novels are heavy on illustrations which will help my students grasp what is going on in the stories even if they do not understand every word. I plan to do grade level activities with these books and build my students’ confidence reading in a new language. I plan to strengthen their writing skills as well as we reflect on what we are reading and how it applies to our lives. By having these graphic novels, my newcomer students will be able to learn new vocabulary that they may not normally experience in daily conversations. They will be able to boost their confidence in reading English individually as well as reading out loud to improve pronunciation. I cannot wait to challenge my students with these graphic novels and grow them to be able to read regular novels on their own.
