Vocabulary Games for English Learners
Funded May 16, 2022My students and I are enjoying the vocabulary games. They are especially a big hit during our monthly "Fun Friday." The students are having so much fun that they are forgetting that they are also learning.
We were so excited when we received the board games, that we started to play them immediately. We had a lot of fun playing Upwords, Boggle, Bananagrams, Taboo, Apples to Apples, Blurt, Once Upon a Time, and Jabuka.
My students and I will continue to enjoy playing the games. Vocabulary board games are a great way for English Language Learners to practice the language in small group settings. This is also a great opportunity for students to take an active role in their own learning. Thank you for supporting English Language Learners.”

Funded Jul 28, 2022I am an avid reader and I want my students to love to read as much as I do. For several years, I have helped to facilitate the Million Minutes Reading Challenge at my middle school. Students and teachers are encouraged to read daily and to log in their reading minutes using a digital platform. Students and teachers earn weekly prizes for reading the most minutes. We have reached our goal of reading a million minutes two years in a row. We celebrated our successes with a Winter Carnival and an end of year Block Party.
"A Novel Approach" and "No More Fake Reading" has helped my colleagues and I to make independent reading part of our daily routine, to promote student choice, to create a year long reading log, and to build extensive classroom libraries filled with both fiction and nonfiction books. Independent Reading has now become an integral part of our ELA curriculum.
The "Inspire Lifelong Readers" project has created a reading community within my school. Teachers and students are sharing their love for reading with each other and their families. It is awe inspiring to set a very lofty goal and to achieve that goal with everyone working together as a true team. Your generous donation has made that happen.”

Funded Apr 7, 2022Thank you for contributing to "Art Relaxation." My students used the resources to unwind after PSSA testing. They created their very own Mandalas using the circle templates and markers. Students mounted their Mandalas on cardstock and we displayed them in the hallway for the entire school to see. My students also found coloring the large posters as they destressed from the test.
My students were excited when they saw all the materials they could use to become "artists" for the week. At first they couldn't see how they could turn the circle templates into Mandalas, but once they learned the basic shapes, they became experts.
Moving forward to the end of the school year, I will continue to have the students show off their creativity by learning how to create Mandalas using paint and Q tips and designing their own posters. With all of the materials we received, the possibilities are endless.”

Funded May 13, 2021My school has challenged all of our students to read 1,000,000 minutes by the end of the 2021/2022 school year.
At the end of the 2020/2021 school year, I held a "Book Tasting" for students, parents, and teachers at my school. We "tasted" a variety of multicultural books that I purchased through your generous donations. Based on everyone's choices, the books were then given to teachers to use in their classrooms libraries and to give "book talks" to their students.
Students are able to read the self-selected books and to record the number of minutes they have read weekly for the Million Minutes Reading Challenge. Students can earn prizes for being the top reader for the week, the month, and for the year. We also have monthly initiatives, such as Book Bingo and March Madness of Books, to encourage our students to participate in the challenge. Our goal is to promote the love of reading within our students and for them to become lifelong learners.
Students, teachers, and parents are enjoying the books and participating in the Million Minutes Reading Challenge.”

Funded Mar 6, 2020Thank you for supporting my project, "A Picture Book a Day in Middle School." I purchased pictures books with the theme of diversity and I am using them to teach SEL concepts to my students.
In Zoom, my co-teacher and I read a picture book aloud to our students and we then hold shared inquiry discussions. We pose a question related to the theme of diversity and then the students respond in the chat. Our conversations center around the choices characters make, making connections to the stories, and what lessons the author wants the reader to learn. Students then share their thoughts and opinions about the books.
The students are enjoying the picture books. They can relate to the themes found in the books, they love sharing their ideas with their peers, and no matter how old they are middle school students love being read to.”
