Many of the students I teach have endured fear or feelings of hurt. If not from their lives at home, from the toxic digital world around us or from the isolation and lack of empathy they have had from many throughout their lives. Nonetheless, when provided the chance to express themselves or to simply get lost in their own creativity, they can build confidence, form a community of like-minded friends and look past their suffering -- toward a greater sense of self worth and empowerment. I strongly believe these students, like all students, can benefit from a calm and therapeutic art recess, away from the stressful and overly stimulating digital world. I already have students that draw with me twice weekly. These drawing materials will help them to focus on learning and improving a craft with meditation and repetition (learning to succeed gradually and patiently). The materials will also help the them to express themselves and more consciously engage with their feelings and thoughts, which is very hard for many teens today.
