These supplies will allow us to teach an experiential textiles course for up to 16 students next semester. Throughout the course, students will learn about different materials, processes, and uses for textiles. While we have access to many of these materials and will emphasize resourcefulness and re-use when it comes to fabric, string, yarn, etc., we want our students to gain familiarity with sewing machines and other equipment that we currently do not have. Hands-on, project-based approaches to learning help our students engage their creativity in a new way and complement our writing-intensive early college coursework. These sewing machines will also be of long-term use to our performing arts programs in facilitating costume-making and stage/set design, as well as future textiles courses.
