In fourth grade many students are dealing with their own social issues day to day. A favorite reading unit in fourth grade is social issue book clubs. Students will get together in groups of 4 and read shared books. This common experience will develop turn taking skills, help students build on the ideas of others, as well as work on their ability to verbalize their ideas and opinions in a clear and coherent manner. Students can challenge ideas and lead others to use evidence from the text when voicing their ideas. This unit it extremely important for preparing our students for middle school and beyond!
