Hygiene can be a barrier to forming new relationships. When students come in smelling like they haven't showered or brushed their teeth in several days, other students don't even want to go near them; teachers can find it difficult to work with them one-on-one because of the odor. Poor peer and school relationships have been linked to poor life outcomes, including higher drop out rates, higher rates of incarceration, and lower self-esteem. A conversation about hygiene is worthless if the student doesn't have the resources to address the issue. It's not fair to students to end the conversation at "hey, you stink!" if the rest of that sentence is "hey, you stink (and there isn't a lot you can do about it)." This project aims to concurrently address the hygiene and social issues. Help us address their hygiene so their character can shine through!
