Many of my students love music so much they live their lives by tunes. In the classroom we can use this in a variety of ways. First students use music as a reward for learning to complete a task. Second students also learn from songs we sing and listen to at work (RocknLearn Telling Time and Learning to Read). Lastly is one of the more important ways we use music in the room. Students with autism can become overstimulated with noise in the classroom, internal noise, and overstimulated body movement. This can cause a student to become upset, sad and angry. With music, the staff can calm a student's mind and body enough to implement reward systems, learning about feelings and what to do next time we feel that way. Music is the most powerful tool in our classroom.
