Since my students are not fluent readers, a listening center will make learning much more engaging. It will make a difference with my students' language development. My students need help with decoding unfamiliar words, exposure of new academic vocabulary, critical thinking skills, and an introduction to different genres that they may not choose on their own, including books that may be above their grade level. With a listening center, my students will have the opportunity to be exposed to stories that will foster their reading development. My students will sit with their cooperative group and have a chance to become independent readers. This will build their oral fluency, comprehension, and make connections with characters in the stories. We will be using the listening center during our group rotations so that each group has an opportunity to benefit from it by teaching students word recognition, including reading with expression. Becoming great readers will help with comprehension skills and reading strategies that will transfer to other academic subjects.
