We are a Title I school and recently, our district has gone to a 100% free breakfast and lunch policy for students. Title I "shows how my kids eat but not how they learn" a brilliant mind once told me. My kids need to be able to explore the world outside of their town, and many never get that chance. Eastern Kentucky is often depicted as being a poor, uneducated, lost cause of an area. Nothing is farther from the truth. My kids can farm, climb mountains, tell you lots of facts about nature, and they can learn! Appalachia is full of deep roots, and I never want my kids to be ashamed of their heritage or their home. I want them to know life away from here is different, not better or worse, and they can be successful wherever their road takes them. They amaze me. Everyday, my heart bursts with pride at how funny, smart, and caring my kids truly are. From my ESL, to my diverse, to my "country" kids...they give their all.
