  • Starting the School Year Strong!

    This school year has been an awesome one and I would've not been able to do it without your help. Thank you so much for supporting my classroom. With your support, I was able to complete a self-created curriculum unit on WEB DuBois and The Seventh Ward, and students were able to become anthropologists and engage with the city of Philadelphia in a critical way. Students were able to see the history of "Old Philadelphia" in the Seventh Ward as being an important part of the Black social life in the city and the painstaking work that WEB DuBois did in order to improve sociology. Students were able to see how gentrification had changed the character of the Seventh Ward as we know it today, and what social forces are changing their community. It was refreshing to see students to be their best selves and feel open to express themselves to others. Thank you for giving my students the opportunity to be awesome.”

I am a very new teacher and upon entering the classroom I recognized that there are not a lot of available materials to ensure the success of my students. The folders will be used in order to hold them accountable for their reading and writing assignments. The big easel will be used for community guidelines and graphic organizers in order to process and understand content. Other materials such as the construction, glue, scissors are going to be used for art and crafts projects, namely so that they can have control as to represent key facts and details in social studies. By donating to this project, you are not only helping my students have the materials to succeed but you are also giving them the opportunity to demonstrate ownership of their learning. There are so many places in this world that are hostile to children and I want to make sure that my students to carve out their own havens-- starting in my classroom.
