During the pandemic, student's were void of any interpersonal and hands-on activity. Studies show that students learn best through experiments, hearing the information, writing the information, and use of visuals - a holistic pedagogical approach. However, even before the pandemic, students rarely got hands on opportunities. My students favorite units in Science is the Human Body; where we learn about the nervous system (emphasis on the brain), cardiovascular system (emphasis on the heart), and digestive system. Even in 4th grade these topics are very complex and I believe it is better to deeply understand the anatomy of organs rather than just commit to memorization. From experience, this is best done through hands-on approaches like dissection labs and videos. Unfortunately, many will never get the change to experience this, especially students who are in title 1 schools. I believe dissection labs will be memorable, highly engaging, and foster more interest in the subject of Science. Bringing fun and interest into the classroom will help the students focus on things other than COVID and other issues students may be facing.
