As a first-year teacher, my classroom library is comprised of the books I grew up reading. I don't look like most of my students. My books don't have protagonists that look like my students. I hope that by surrounding students with books featuring people who look like and share experiences with my them, that silent sustained reading becomes a tool of empowerment and not an instrument of silence and oppression. Each day students read between 20 to 30 minutes independently. Can they see themselves in the protagonists of their novels? Can they see themselves as the protagonists of their lives? I believe stories teach us how to think about ourselves and the world we live in. I want students to see themselves as actors, movers, and doers, in the world. It starts with stories.
