Sensory and Social Supports!
Funded Jan 23, 2024My students have loved using the sensory resources and social emotional books they received through this project! Every time we have indoor recess or the students need some extra movement in their day, we bring out these materials and set up an obstacle course for them! They love running around the room balancing on the sensory stones, crawling through the sensory tunnel, stepping or poking at the sensory tiles, rocking back and forth on the balance board, hopping on the hopscotch mat, and swiveling on the wobble chair. The wobble chair has also helped students focus during their speech sessions because their bodies can keep moving while their brains work. The light-up musical shape sorter has also been very popular and has helped the kids practice their colors, shapes, requesting, and fine motor skills.
The social awareness and feelings books have become a big hit in the classroom. They are currently in the "peaceful corner" where students can use them to assist them in understanding their feelings and help them to calm down. Since using these books, the students have shown more variety in their feelings vocabulary; one student even described that she was feeling "anxious" one day.
I plan to keep using the feelings books along with the "I see seasons" book set in future lesson plans to continue the academic and social emotional growth that has now been kick-started with the materials received from your generous donations. I am so appreciative for every one of you. Thank you again for helping to fund these amazing resources that will continue to benefit my students for years to come!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Starr
