As a result of the pandemic and virtual learning, my students have struggled with belonging, feeling valued, and missing out on being a part of a project that makes a difference. This Sensory Garden will allow them to be a part of something bigger than themselves. It will initiate team work, opportunities to serve others, be more physically fit, and help improve everyone’s mental health.
My students will be able to use all five senses (touch, taste, hear, see, and smell) as they learn and grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers for the benefit of one another and our surrounding community. The items requested will provide a starting point for this garden to become a reality. They will learn how to organize the layout of a garden to be most beneficial by using their math and science knowledge. We will continue our units on measurements and the life cycle of plants. In order to bring this Sensory Garden to life we need the following: a trellis for honeysuckle to grow (smell/taste/see/touch), gardening tools (touch), planting containers for herbs (taste/smell/see/touch), an arbor for plants and/or flowers to grow upon (smell/see/touch), pavers to provide different textures to walk upon (touch), and wind spinners and wind chimes (hear). The Sensory Garden will connect my students and community together as they learn to grow and care for the garden’s goodies. In return, my students and the community will be better prepared for providing for themselves in the future and mental and physical health will be improved upon.
