I have a classroom of 17 students who don't always have the comfiest home environments. Since our school is a low income school, I really try to encourage my students to dig in and get comfortable in my room. Sometimes school is the place that they feel safest and most loved. It is my goal every single day to make sure my students basic needs are met, so I can help them be successful in school. Our school does an excellent job of making sure students are signed up for Free/Reduced lunches, that everyone has a warm coat for winter, and that students have backpacks full of food to take home for the weekends. My school simply doesn't have the means to supply our classrooms with the type of seating that could make children really successful. I've noticed that children are so excited to get out of their desks, to choose where they can sit down, or even to get to lay on the floor and do their assignment. The more I let these kids move, the more success I see on their assignments. As a teacher that lugs home my heavy bag to grade in the comfort of my home every night, it finally dawned on me that they want a warm and welcoming homey classroom. They need a safe space to thrive in. Please help me fund some flexible seating for my classroom!
