Many students have never had a garden, or even understand where their meat really comes from. In this project, we will be examining the differences between traditional growing methods, hydroponics, and aquaponics in the classroom to determine what can be done to better provide food to people in the future. The students will also be examining the different pH, oxygen, and carbon dioxide levels of the aquaponics system to more fully understand cellular respiration and photosynthesis. This project will be used by all of my students in different ways, depending on the class. In biology, we will focus on the water cycle, carbon cycle, and nitrogen cycle that occurs within the system. In environmental science, we will focus on the agricultural aspect. In health, we will use what the system grows to talk about nutrition and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle on a budget. In botany, we will examine both the terrestrial plant anatomy and the aquatic plant anatomy and compare the two as well as examine what methods work best for the growth of different plants.
