As a result of a recent novel study of George Washington's Socks in 4th grade, our students fell in love with historical fiction. They were truly engaged and riveted to the unfolding of the story set during the American Revolution. Due to their excitement for the plot, they were able to perform academically higher than expected on reading standards that focus on character analysis, summarizing, paraphrasing, and key details, all while tying fiction with social studies standards. Where our struggling readers will often avoid reading grade-level texts or historical fiction because of its difficulty, we hope that providing their own copy of its sequel will further their excitement to grow as an independent reader.
