These are items I normally purchase for my classroom: granola bars and fruit for students who are hungry, hot cocoa and herbal tea for cold mornings, glitter glue and other art supplies for making posters and other projects, glue sticks, scissors, and colored pencils for students to take home for homework. They are not funded by the district; they are items that teachers buy separately, out of our own money. Everyone learns best when we feel safe and comforted and comfortable. Students in high poverty like the ones I teach often struggle with violence, housing, and food insecurity, and lack of basic supplies for learning at home. When I provide simple comforts, like an orange, a cup of tea or cocoa, or a baggie of art supplies to bring home, students feel taken care of, and greater connection to the classroom and the learning process. This, in turn, helps them become better learners.
