Ethnomusicology! Dilworth students know it (the study of music from different cultures), and love it. We've learned about Egyptian doumbek rhythms, Jamaican reggae, Indian Bollywood dance, Japanese taiko drumming, Mexican mariachi, and South African gumboot dancing- now it's time to bring it home! In this year's next ethno. units, we'll be talking about zydeco rhythms from Louisiana's Creole-speaking culture and bucket drumming from the streets of New York (and other cities). We already have the excitement and the skill, we just need instruments to play. Students traditionally practice rhythmic playing on body percussion, and I'm looking for new methods to increase engagement. Playing instruments, especially in the integrated context of authentic cultural learning, increases participation and causes learning to "stick". In limited teaching spaces, buckets and sticks, washboards and thimbles can be easily stored and distributed for use within the ethnomusicology lessons, and beyond. Please help me provide students with multi-disciplinary, cross-cultural experiences.
