One of the first things you see in a Reggio Emilia classroom is natural colors and wood toys. I am asking for different wood and natural toys that would help us begin the process of implementing a Reggio style classroom. Wood manipulatives require children to use their own imagination to play while expanding their minds. Wood toys do not have electronic parts or voice commands that will instruct them on what to do. I want children to have choices on what to do and give them opportunities to open their creative minds. Wood toys in the classroom would allow our students to use their reasoning skills and make a choice on which activities they see fit. These wood toys will stimulate imaginative play and require different types of intelligence like emotional, thinking, and social skills. They will also assist with motor skills and problem solving such as when they are attempting to make a plan on how to build towers or bridges. Children also begin to exercise their fine motor skills and hand eye coordination with wood toys instead of simply pressing buttons and watching. The texture of wood toys provides a sensory experience to our children who need extra support and require a multi sensory approach to learning.
