  • A Studio Foundation

    Funded Sep 20, 2022

    Your generous support has allowed for providing a foundation of visual arts supplies for an amazing class of 37 students who take part in a new Studio Art elective at our school. Students have delighted in seeing their marks, their individual timing when they used ultra fine markers to draw blind contour portraits. They've used protective mats to cut and splice together beautiful Notan designs that juxtapose lovely balances of positive and negative space.

    Most recently, they have used art markers, pastels, chalk, crayon, paper and acrylic glue medium to create collages in the style of Jean-Michel Basquiat after visiting the King Pleasure exhibit as a class - exploring through creating relationship maps and visual rhythm pieces before synthesizing a final mixed media piece.

    In our Spring Semester beginning this week, we look ahead to exploring value and depth across several types of media. My students and I wholly appreciate your vital contribution to one of the only elective courses they have available to them in our small high school. Because of your gifts, they are able to access the tools for self exploration, representing individual and collective narratives, and unlimited elements of expression.”

The range of supplies for visual arts will allow students to co-develop an arts program at our high school, where we currently lack the budget to hire a full-time art teacher. They will be able to engage in the development of long-term visual arts projects while many, as newcomers to the United States, will have an opportunity to strengthen their communication and English literacy skills. While creating visual and tactile representations, my students take part in a simultaneous rehearsal and troubleshooting of their literacy skills through self-expression. They will be able to plan, design, and execute a self-guided art piece - as well as collaborate with a group of peers to create a community-sourced installation. These art supplies will offer my students a new medium with which to understand themselves, communicate with each other, and become creative problem solvers in our larger community.

About my class
