Two of the challenging parts of teaching orchestra is to teach students how to play in tune and teach them to play at the right time. Students learn to play better in tune once they know how to tune their instruments. Having a metronome will help them establish an internal beat and help them understand when their notes are to be played. I can teach an entire class to tune their instruments at the same time if I have a class set of tuners, and can assign students to learn specific rhythms more accurately if they have a metronome. I have been teaching students one by one using a tuner on my phone. It is time consuming and cuts down on instruction time having to go one by one. Students want to get to the good part and learn their pieces instead of waiting for the teacher to tune each person individually.
