I’m working with small groups of 6th Grade lower level reading students. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing many of these kids over the years. I decided I wanted to start their reading experience off right this year. I surveyed what they like to read, and graphic novels were tops. I then googled top 50 graphic novels, and after some discussion we chose The Amulet Series. I bought 3 copies of book 1 and read one myself to prep questions. Well, the first group to get to read were 3 boys, and when they finished their reading for that first day, all 3 looked at me with the biggest smiles! 6th grade boys smiling at me for asking them to read! I was hooked and so were they. Since then I’ve purchased the second in the series. They have their own book discussions with very little prompting. When they finish book two, they’re going to draw one of their favorite scenes with dialogue. They want to keep reading these. The other day they even said “I wish you would come more often.” If we can get 3 copies of the upcoming books, we can really branch out with activities, and I will have struggling kids asking to read! Yeah!
