One of every three of our students is suffering from trauma. Some live in a constant state of crisis. 97% of our students are living under the stress of living under the poverty line. I am working to create a safe space where students can come to talk, calm down after an event, and learn the skills necessary to function inside of the classroom and community. Additionally, I would like to support classroom teachers with flexible seating and sensory integration in their classrooms by providing them the opportunity to borrow items from a lending library. Studies show that the use of these items, can greatly reduce the incidents of behavioral interruptions within the classroom. Students who have access to movement and necessary sensory input are able to attend better and feel more comfortable in their space. Supporting teachers, by making support items available gives them the opportunity to try non punitive behavior strategies without the stress of having to research and purchase on their own. We are hoping to document behaviors with, and without, the new materials for a full data driven analysis. Thank you!
