A teacher field trip to Nairobi, Kenya will provide invaluable professional learning about cultures, diversity, equity in education, and deeper pedagogical understandings of student learning. Through this experience, I will have the opportunity to engage in educational round tables, co-create lessons for my students with hearing loss, immerse in experiential professional development at regional schools. Additionally, I will be taking all of my learning experiences to design a series of video lessons on the Kenyan culture and animal biodiversity as a window to life outside of their residential school. These lessons will be student-driven and based on their personal curiosities so that there is a real-world application for learning. The more we are willing to open our minds and hearts we create a truly global community. Most importantly, this project will create a once in a lifetime experience for the students as they learn and view science, culture, language arts, communication, writing, and performance in the school. Our goal for this project is a cultural exchange. A day in the life of the Kenyan students compared to a day in the life of a residential Deaf student. Two cultures worlds apart developing friendships, empathy, and understanding.
