All of my student are between the ages of 5 and 6. At this age we have students that are on many different academic levels. There are maybe only 2 students out of the 22 that I have that are reading on a first grade level. Everyone else is a beginning reader. I also have students that are learning English (ESL). Should that stop them from reading? Absolutely NOT! I want them to be able to go to our classroom library and listen to stories without going their to flip through book and play. That has been my experience over the years. It’s been pretty tough. After tons of modeling sessions, non-readers still struggle in the library. Even readers struggle. The freedom of choosing books on their own so early in the year is most of the time a problem because to students, it’s play time which then takes away from instructional time. I feel and believe in my heart that a listening center will provide a different sense of engagement as students listen to stories. Herring music and chimes to turn pages is a great was to keep them engaged so they can continue on their path of learning and so the rest of the class can continue learning with no interruptions. Thank you so much if you help support us! We will greatly appreciate you!!
