The phrase “windows and mirrors” has been used to talk about children’s literature for some time. It is powerful to see yourself reflected in picture books and it is also powerful to see into a world that might be unfamiliar to you. The reason these children’s books were selected is that they focus on multiple perspectives. These books provide students a guide in discovering themselves and the world. Diverse books allow students to learn from other people’s experiences. Authentic literature is at the heart of students’ understanding of the human experience.
